Math 5521 - Finite Element Solution Methods II - Spring 2018

Instructor: Jeffrey Connors
E-mail: jeffrey.connors@uconn.edu
Office: MONT 230
Office hours: MW after class or any other time I am available.

Class time and room: MWF 1:25 PM - 2:15 PM in MONT 101

Text : None (see course references).

This course builds upon MATH 5520 by providing introductions to mixed, hybrid and discontinuous-Galerkin (DG) finite element methods. Flow in porous media will serve as an application to motivate canonical mathematical models. We develop various discretizations, stability and convergence properties, algebraic systems and comparisons of methods. The focus will remain on elliptic problems, with some brief coverage of (stationary) hyperbolic problems.

Homework: About four written homework assignments, which will be posted below over time.

Computation: Two computational projects using FreeFEM++. The software is available for free here.

Grading: The grade is 60% of the homework score plus 20% of each of the two computational project scores.
