Security Alert. The Computer Emergency Response Team at Carnegie Mellon University has issued an urgent alert to all users of Microsoft Word, Office or PowerPoint on either the Windows or Macintosh platform. A particularly insidious vulnerability exists in those applications for viruses and worms to execute undetected as macros. For details consult the CERT Advisory of October 8.

The University provides---at no cost---Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus for both Windows and Macintosh to faculty, students and staff,. This program has a feature that you can set to retrieve updates on a weekly basis. To access the software, visit the UConn Information Technology Services download page.

Still another warning was issued October 11 by UConn ITS, this time for the Sircam virus , which affects only Windows computers.
